Puddle Partners

The One on One mentorship program is dedicated to empower pregnant and parenting teen moms, particularly those from low-income and Black/Latinx communities in Chicago and the surrounding south suburbs. Through mentorship and essential resources, the program helps these young women navigate the challenges of parenthood while ensuring they have the support needed to complete their education and transition into responsible adulthood.

Our volunteer mentors are professionals from the community who receive training to provide individualized support to our mentees. Each mentee also receives a monthly $100 gift card, to address immediate needs such as diapers, baby wipes, personal hygiene items and food, making a significant difference in the lives of the participants.

Puddle Readers

Our Literacy Program encourages each mentee to read every day to their child in order to read 1000 books before kindergarten. Each mentee receives a child’s book every month and is expected to complete a reading log daily. Our moms are also required to obtain a library card and use their local library. With the Chicago Public Library (CPL) Card, and most Suburban Libraries, our moms can obtain a FREE pass to enter a wide range of museums, historical societies, and zoos in the greater Chicagoland area. This pass program is accessible online, 24/7, with no need to visit a library location to check out or return a pass.

The Puddle Project models “The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge” which is an innovative and accessible initiative designed to foster early literacy skills in young children, especially those in the critical 0-5 age range. Numerous studies show that reading is a key indicator of future academic success, and with public formal education typically beginning around ages 5-6, the early years are crucial for setting a strong foundation.

This challenge encourages parents and caregivers to read a book—any book—to their child, with the goal of reaching 1,000 books before kindergarten. It's a simple yet effective way to build early literacy habits and nurture a love of reading in young children. By supporting our teen moms in this

endeavor, their children gain the confidence they need to become strong readers, preparing them for future academic success.

The approach is not only manageable but also fun, providing an enjoyable and engaging way to support early childhood development and strengthen parent-child bonds through shared reading experiences. It also encourages our teen moms to read as well!

Receiving a book every month is a valuable resource for our teen parents looking to make a positive impact on their child's education. And having a library card opens a world of experiences to our young moms and their children.
